Solicitor General Tushar Mehta made a strong remark in the Supreme Court as the court took suo motu cognisance of the Twisha Sharma case.

May 25, 2026: Tushar Mehta on Monday told the Supreme Court of India that “a divorced daughter is better than a dead daughter” during the hearing of the Twisha Sharma case. The remark came as the apex court took suo motu cognisance of the matter concerning Twisha Sharma’s death at her matrimonial home in Bhopal.

The Supreme Court registered the case under the title related to alleged institutional bias and procedural discrepancies in the unnatural death of a young woman at her matrimonial residence. The hearing was conducted before a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant. The court’s intervention follows growing concerns raised by Twisha Sharma’s family over the investigation and postmortem process.

Twisha Sharma, a former model-actor, was found dead earlier this month at her matrimonial home in Bhopal. Her family accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and sought a second postmortem through the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The case has since drawn national attention, with fresh investigations and court-monitored proceedings continuing.
