Heatwave conditions are set to continue across large parts of northwest India for the next four to five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintaining a red alert for Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. A yellow alert has also been issued for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan as soaring temperatures continue to grip the region.

According to meteorologist Akhil Srivastava, a western disturbance currently centred over Jammu & Kashmir is expected to trigger thunderstorm activity across the hilly states, especially Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

“Today, a western disturbance was centred over Jammu & Kashmir. In view of this, thunderstorm activity is likely in the hilly regions, mainly across Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” Srivastava told IANS.

He further said that isolated hailstorms are also likely in parts of Jammu, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for the Union Territory.

“There is also a possibility of a hailstorm at a few isolated places in Jammu. Keeping this in mind, an orange alert has been issued for Jammu & Kashmir,” he added.

No Immediate Relief From Heatwave Conditions

Despite the possibility of thunderstorms in some areas, weather experts have warned that the prevailing heatwave conditions over northwest India are unlikely to ease anytime soon.

Srivastava noted that isolated thunderstorm activity may occur in the plains as well, but it is not expected to bring significant relief from the extreme heat.

“The heatwave conditions currently prevailing over northwest India are expected to continue for the next four to five days, as there is little likelihood of any significant change in maximum temperatures,” he said.

The prolonged spell of intense heat has already begun affecting daily life across several states, with residents struggling to cope with rising daytime temperatures and uncomfortable weather conditions.

Chandigarh, Punjab And Himachal Continue To Sizzle

Heatwave conditions continued across Chandigarh, Punjab and parts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, with locals expressing concern over the increasing temperatures and their wider impact.

A resident of Chandigarh told IANS that the worsening heat was becoming dangerous not just for people, but also for animals and the environment.

“The heat is increasing a lot, and the temperature is rising significantly. We all should take care of ourselves as well as birds, animals, and trees,” the resident said.

IMD Issues Safety Advisory

The IMD has advised residents in affected regions to avoid stepping outdoors during peak afternoon hours unless absolutely necessary. People have also been urged to stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation as the prolonged heatwave continues to raise concerns over public health, water shortages and agricultural stress across north and central India.

With no major dip in temperatures expected over the coming days, officials have urged citizens to remain cautious and follow weather advisories regularly.
