Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar reviewed the drought-like situation across the state

July 7, 2026: Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday reviewed the drought-like situation in several parts of the state and said the government is closely monitoring conditions. Speaking during his visit to Kalaburagi, he said a legal framework exists for declaring drought-affected areas and addressing the challenges faced by affected communities. On demands for a farm loan waiver, the Chief Minister remained non-committal, saying the government would first examine the extent of the issue before taking a decision.

The Chief Minister also announced the formation of a new Praja Seva Department to address public grievances. The department, headed by a minister, will examine petitions submitted by citizens and provide relief wherever possible. During his visit, Shivakumar personally received representations from the public and later chaired a review meeting, warning officials of strict action if they failed to respond effectively to the drought situation. He directed authorities to ensure adequate fertiliser supply and proper filling of tanks and lakes.

Highlighting the government’s development agenda, Shivakumar said Karnataka is working with Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and the Centre on the proposed Krishna, Cauvery and Godavari river-linking project to address long-term water issues. He also assured that all development works initiated by the government would continue without interruption. On the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he stressed that no eligible voter should lose the right to vote and instructed Booth Level Officers to visit every household multiple times to ensure all eligible names remain on the voter list.
