Police arrested the accused after a forensic report confirmed poisoning, turning the suspicious death into a murder case

June 29, 2026: A doctor from Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district has been arrested for allegedly murdering his ailing wife by mixing poison in drinking water and giving it to her under the guise of medicine. The case came to light after a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report confirmed that the woman died due to poisoning. Police said the incident was reported on February 4 in the Bahadrabad police station area after the victim’s brother, Mohammad Aneesh, filed a complaint accusing the woman’s husband, Afzal, of deliberately poisoning her.

According to the complaint, the victim had been suffering from a prolonged illness and was undergoing treatment. Police said Afzal allegedly took advantage of her condition and gave her poisoned water, claiming it was medicine. Her health deteriorated soon after consuming it, and despite being rushed for medical treatment, she died. As the circumstances appeared suspicious, police launched an investigation, collecting evidence from the scene and preserving the victim’s viscera for forensic examination.

The FSL report confirmed the presence of a poisonous substance, prompting police to register a murder case. Investigators intensified efforts to trace Afzal after receiving information that he was attempting to flee. He was arrested near the Badhedi Rajputana Highway Bridge in the Shantarshah area on Saturday. During questioning, police claimed he confessed to the crime, stating that he had become mentally distressed due to his wife’s prolonged illness. Afzal (38), a resident of Mirzapur Mustafabad under Bahadrabad Kotwali, was later produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
