Strong dust storms swept through Delhi as the IMD issued red and orange alerts, forecasting rain, thunderstorms

June 9, 2026: Strong dust storms hit Delhi on Tuesday evening, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue red and orange alerts across parts of the National Capital Region. The weather department forecast moderate rainfall accompanied by severe thunderstorms in South Delhi, South East Delhi, South West Delhi, New Delhi and North West Delhi. Moderate rain and thunderstorms are also expected in North Delhi, Central Delhi, East Delhi, North East Delhi and Shahdara.

The IMD has predicted a significant change in weather conditions across north India due to a fresh Western Disturbance expected to influence the Western Himalayan region from June 11. Rainfall is likely in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan between June 10 and June 15. The department has also warned of thunder squalls, lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph across several northern states between June 11 and 12, while hailstorm activity is expected in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on June 12.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has advanced further, covering North Bengal, Sikkim and the entire northeastern region. The IMD said conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to progress into eastern, central and western parts of the country over the next few days. Rainfall is also expected across Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand through June 14, offering relief from the prevailing heatwave conditions in several areas.
