The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in several Himachal Pradesh districts before forecasting rain, snowfall, thunderstorms
May 26, 2026: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a dual weather alert for Himachal Pradesh, warning of severe heatwave conditions over the next two days followed by widespread rain, snowfall and hailstorms later this week. According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, dry weather is expected on May 26 and 27, leading to a sharp rise in temperatures across several districts. A yellow alert has been issued for isolated areas of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Solan, Shimla and Sirmaur.
Officials said both minimum and maximum temperatures could rise by 2 to 5 degrees Celsius during the ongoing heatwave phase. Una recorded the highest temperature in the state at 41.6 degrees Celsius, while Keylong remained the coldest with a minimum temperature of 2.5 degrees Celsius. However, weather conditions are expected to change from May 28 as a fresh Western Disturbance approaches northwest India, bringing light to moderate rainfall and snowfall across many parts of the state.
The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph in some regions, especially in high-altitude districts such as Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti. Authorities have advised residents to avoid heat exposure, stay hydrated and remain indoors during thunderstorms. Farmers have been urged to protect crops and orchards from hail and strong winds through precautionary measures. The weather department said temperatures are expected to fall significantly after the wet spell, bringing relief from the prevailing heat conditions.
