India is set to receive its fourth unit of the S-400 Triumf in May 2026, marking another step in expanding its multi-layered air defence network. Known informally within Indian defence circles as the “Sudarshan Chakra,” the system is a key component of India’s strategy to counter modern aerial threats.
What the S-400 System Is
The S-400 Triumf is a mobile, long-range surface-to-air missile system developed by Russia. It is designed to detect, track, and destroy a wide range of airborne threats, including fighter aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles. The system is capable of tracking over 100 targets simultaneously and engaging multiple threats at varying ranges, making it one of the most advanced air defence platforms currently in operation.
Its advanced radar systems allow for long-distance detection, while its high mobility ensures rapid repositioning based on operational requirements.
Why It Is Called “Sudarshan Chakra”
The nickname “Sudarshan Chakra” is inspired by the mythological weapon of Lord Vishnu, symbolising precision, speed, and unstoppable force. The Indian Air Force has used this metaphor to describe the S-400’s ability to provide 360-degree aerial protection and neutralise incoming threats with high accuracy.
Role in Operation Sindoor
During Operation Sindoor, the S-400 system reportedly played a significant defensive role. Defence sources suggest it was used to intercept incoming drones and missile threats, contributing to the creation of a strong air defence shield and forcing adversary aircraft to operate from safer distances.
While these reports are based on defence assessments, they have been widely cited as evidence of the system’s operational effectiveness in real combat scenarios.
Expansion of India’s Air Defence Network
India originally signed a deal in 2018 with Russia for five S-400 units. With the arrival of the fourth system, deployment is progressing in phases, gradually strengthening coverage across key strategic regions, including military bases, urban centres, and sensitive installations.
The system integrates into India’s broader layered air defence architecture, enhancing coordination with existing radar and missile systems.
