The Centre has granted cabinet minister status to India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi

June 25, 2026: The Indian government has granted cabinet minister status to India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, highlighting the importance New Delhi places on its relationship with Dhaka. A notification issued by the Union Home Ministry stated that Trivedi has been assigned the equivalent status of a Union Cabinet Minister in the Table of Precedence. He is the first political appointee to serve as India’s envoy to Bangladesh in nearly five decades. Officials clarified that the status is personal to him and mainly applies to ceremonial and protocol-related functions.

The move is being viewed as a diplomatic signal aimed at strengthening India-Bangladesh relations during a period of renewed engagement between the two countries. The enhanced rank is expected to help Trivedi interact more directly with Bangladesh’s top political leadership and demonstrate that he enjoys the confidence of India’s highest decision-makers. Similar status has previously been granted to a few political appointees serving as ambassadors, including former Congress leader Siddhartha Shankar Ray during his tenure as India’s envoy to the United States.

India and Bangladesh have been working to rebuild ties after relations deteriorated following the collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government in 2024 and the emergence of a new administration in Dhaka. Recent diplomatic exchanges have focused on restoring cooperation in trade, energy, and regional issues. Trivedi, who assumed charge in Bangladesh earlier this month, has already announced the resumption of regular visa services, including tourist visas from June 28. He is expected to play a key role in advancing efforts to normalize and strengthen bilateral relations in the coming months.
