The TMC MP accused sections of the media of selectively highlighting parts of her BBC interview

June 25, 2026: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has criticised sections of the media after excerpts from her recent BBC interview discussing BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari went viral on social media. Moitra alleged that some media outlets selectively highlighted attention-grabbing portions of the conversation while ignoring its broader political context. The controversy erupted after clips featuring her remarks about Adhikari began circulating widely, prompting intense political discussion.

In the interview, Moitra said Adhikari felt he deserved a larger role within the Trinamool Congress but eventually realised that such ambitions would not materialise while Abhishek Banerjee remained influential in the party. She noted that Adhikari chose to join the BJP and openly pursue his political ambitions, adding that there was “something to respect” in that decision. Moitra also questioned why leaders who later rebelled against the TMC had not publicly raised concerns when the party was electorally successful.

Another segment of the interview that attracted attention involved Moitra recalling her personal friendship with Adhikari. She described him as a long-time friend who supported her during her first Assembly election campaign in Karimpur, including helping with rallies and campaign arrangements. As those comments went viral, Moitra accused parts of the media of focusing only on the most sensational excerpts rather than presenting the full discussion, arguing that her remarks had been taken out of context.
