Court-approved TMC procession turns chaotic near the Chief Minister’s residence as both TMC
July 8, 2026: A tense situation unfolded outside West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence on Harish Chatterjee Street on Wednesday after a court-approved Trinamool Congress (TMC) procession reached the area. Amid the growing commotion, Banerjee stepped out of her residence and repeatedly urged the crowd to disperse. As several people continued recording the scene on their mobile phones and the crowd refused to move, she was seen slapping a man while attempting to restore order. The identity of the individual has not been confirmed.
The procession, which was permitted by the Calcutta High Court to travel from Ballygunge Outpost to Hazra Crossing, reportedly carried a symbolic body of the deceased Baruipur victim. Soon after the march began, supporters of the TMC and BJP exchanged slogans, leading to clashes. The TMC alleged that BJP workers blocked the procession despite court permission, while police later intervened and used batons to control the situation after scuffles broke out between supporters.
Reacting to the incident, Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of deliberately violating the court’s order and claimed her party workers were attacked. She also alleged that BJP supporters gathered outside her residence and threatened TMC workers, adding that her party would move the court for contempt proceedings. The BJP rejected the allegations, with senior leaders Sukant Majumdar and Shamik Bhattacharya criticising Banerjee’s response and accusing the TMC of attempting to create political controversy. The incident has further intensified the political confrontation between the two parties in West Bengal.
