Mamata Banerjee led a major TMC protest in Kolkata, accusing authorities of targeting party leaders
June 2, 2026: Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday led a protest at Rani Rashmoni Avenue in Kolkata against alleged attacks on senior party leaders, including TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee and MP Kalyan Banerjee. Before joining the demonstration, Mamata Banerjee paid floral tributes at the statue of B. R. Ambedkar along with senior TMC leaders, carrying a copy of the Constitution as a symbolic gesture.
The TMC said the protest was organized to highlight what it described as targeted attacks on party leaders and workers during visits to areas affected by post-poll violence. Addressing supporters, Mamata Banerjee strongly criticized the alleged incidents, calling them examples of authoritarian behavior. She claimed attempts were being made to intimidate opposition leaders and asserted that such actions would only strengthen the party rather than weaken it.
The controversy intensified after Abhishek Banerjee alleged that he was attacked with bricks, stones, and eggs during a visit to South 24 Parganas, resulting in an eye injury. Kalyan Banerjee also claimed he survived an alleged attack near Chanditala Police Station while submitting a deputation. Mamata Banerjee warned that the party could expand its agitation beyond West Bengal and stage protests in Delhi if necessary. Meanwhile, police have arrested five people in connection with the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee, and investigations are continuing.
