Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi held crucial discussions with Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar

June 2, 2026: The Congress leadership intensified preparations for Karnataka’s political transition on Tuesday as party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar and senior leader Siddaramaiah in New Delhi. The discussions focused on finalising the composition of the new Karnataka Cabinet and identifying candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. The meeting comes shortly after Siddaramaiah stepped down as Chief Minister, clearing the way for the leadership change.

Shivakumar arrived at Kharge’s residence for high-level consultations on ministerial appointments, key portfolios, and organisational restructuring within the Karnataka Congress. Sources indicated that the talks also covered the Deputy Chief Minister’s post and efforts to maintain a balance of power within the state government. Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal and other senior leaders also participated in the discussions.

The leadership transition is set to culminate with Shivakumar’s swearing-in ceremony on June 3 at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, Karnataka Congress MLA Priyank Kharge also met Mallikarjun Kharge amid speculation regarding his possible role in the new government. The Congress high command is expected to announce the Cabinet line-up and major organisational appointments soon, shaping the future course of governance in Karnataka.
