The body of an 11-year-old girl was recovered from a sack in South 24 Parganas
July 5, 2026: The body of an 11-year-old girl, who had gone missing a day earlier, was recovered from a sack in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Sunday, sparking widespread protests in the area. The girl was found in Baruipur’s Surjyapur Haat after she reportedly left home to buy a birthday gift for a friend and never returned. Her family alleged that four people had forcibly taken her away, while locals claimed she was raped and murdered.
Following the recovery of the body, angry residents blocked the Baruipur–Joynagar Road, burnt tyres, and vandalised some police vehicles, demanding immediate action against those responsible. Inspector General of Police, Presidency Range, Kankarprasad Barui, assured protesters that all those involved would be arrested and said raids were underway to trace the accused. After receiving the assurance, protesters allowed the body to be sent for a post-mortem examination.
Police said one person has been detained for questioning in connection with the case, while the investigation remains ongoing. Officials stated that the post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause of death and establish whether the girl was sexually assaulted. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
