The Southwest Monsoon has arrived in Kerala and is steadily advancing northward
June 7, 2026: With the Southwest Monsoon making its official onset over Kerala, attention has shifted to north India, where residents continue to endure high temperatures and humidity. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi-NCR may experience some pre-monsoon showers in the coming days, but the arrival of the full monsoon is likely to take more time. Based on current projections, the rain-bearing system is expected to reach the national capital between June 25 and June 30, close to its normal schedule.
Before reaching Delhi, the monsoon is expected to advance through eastern and central India. Bihar could witness the onset of the monsoon between June 12 and June 15, with widespread rainfall likely soon after. In Uttar Pradesh, the monsoon is forecast to enter eastern districts between June 15 and June 20 before gradually moving westward. Western Uttar Pradesh may start receiving monsoon rains between June 20 and June 25, paving the way for its arrival in Delhi-NCR.
Meanwhile, Kerala has already begun receiving heavy rainfall, prompting the IMD to issue alerts for several districts. Some areas could receive between 7 cm and 20 cm of rain over the next few days. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds across parts of northwest, central, eastern, and southern India. While Delhi residents may get occasional relief through pre-monsoon activity, widespread monsoon rainfall is expected only after the system progresses further north later this month.
