The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a yellow nowcast warning for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad, predicting light to moderate rainfall at isolated locations over the next few hours as monsoon activity remains active across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The weather alert, issued at 7 am on June 25, advised residents to remain cautious as intermittent rain showers continue to affect the region following the season’s first spell of intense monsoon rainfall.

IMD Predicts More Rainfall Across Mumbai Region

According to the IMD, Mumbai, Thane and Raigad are likely to witness light to moderate spells of rain at isolated places during the next three hours.

The warning comes amid active monsoon conditions along the Konkan coast, prompting the weather department to continue issuing frequent nowcast updates for the region.

Former IMD senior official K.S. Hosalikar stated around 8:30 am that moderate to intermittent heavy showers could occur along the west coast stretching from Raigad to Goa and parts of Karnataka over the next three to four hours.

For Mumbai specifically, he forecast:

  • Partly cloudy skies
  • Occasional light rain showers
  • Continued monsoon activity over the next two to three hours

He also advised residents to closely monitor official IMD updates for the latest weather developments.

Heavy Rain Triggers More Than 100 Tree-Fall Incidents

The latest weather warning follows Mumbai’s first major spell of monsoon rain this season, which caused widespread disruption across several parts of the city.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a total of 113 incidents involving fallen trees and branches were reported across Mumbai in the last 24 hours.

The incidents were distributed as follows:

  • Island City: 40 incidents
  • Eastern Suburbs: 23 incidents
  • Western Suburbs: 50 incidents

Civic authorities have been working to clear affected roads and ensure public safety following the heavy downpour.

Mumbai Witnesses Season’s First Intense Monsoon Spell

Mumbai experienced its first significant monsoon rainfall of the season on Wednesday, resulting in flooding across several low-lying areas and causing disruptions to both road and railway services during peak commuting hours.

The heavy rainfall left many commuters stranded as waterlogging affected key transportation routes across the city.

Several localities recorded exceptionally high rainfall figures during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am:

  • Malvani (Western Suburbs): 340 mm
  • Parel (Central Mumbai): 334 mm

These were among the highest rainfall totals recorded in the city during the spell.

Rainfall Intensity Eases Later In The Day

Although the city experienced intense rainfall overnight and during the morning hours, precipitation levels declined later in the day.

Between 8 am and 2 pm, rainfall recorded by civic authorities was:

  • Island City: 12 mm
  • Eastern Suburbs: 6 mm
  • Western Suburbs: 7 mm

The reduced intensity provided temporary relief after several hours of heavy rainfall and flooding.

Monsoon Arrives Nearly Two Weeks Late

The southwest monsoon officially advanced into Mumbai and the rest of Maharashtra on Tuesday, ending a delayed onset period for the financial capital.

The monsoon reached Mumbai 13 days later than its normal arrival date, raising concerns earlier this month about rainfall deficits across the region.

However, the recent heavy showers indicate that monsoon activity has now become active over Maharashtra and the Konkan belt.

Authorities Advise Caution

With intermittent rain expected to continue, residents have been advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy showers
  • Stay away from weak trees and damaged structures
  • Monitor weather updates issued by the IMD
  • Exercise caution in waterlogged areas and low-lying localities

Municipal authorities remain on alert as further rainfall is expected across Mumbai and neighbouring districts.
