Expelled TMC leaders claim that a majority of the party’s MLAs have backed Ritabrata Banerjee
June 4, 2026: A fresh political storm has erupted within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee reportedly claimed the support of 58 party MLAs and declared himself Leader of the Opposition. The development has raised questions about unity within the party and sparked speculation about a widening internal divide following the party’s recent electoral setback.
Expelled TMC leader Riju Dutta backed Ritabrata’s claim, asserting that the support was secured through a proper legislative process. According to Dutta, while many legislators continue to respect Mamata Banerjee as the party’s principal leader, they are unwilling to accept the leadership of Abhishek Banerjee. He accused Abhishek of promoting a “boss culture” and suggested that dissatisfaction among MLAs has become a driving force behind the rebellion.
The crisis comes at a challenging time for the TMC, which has seen a significant reduction in its strength in the Assembly after the recent elections. Reports indicate that rebel legislators have already submitted letters of support to the Assembly Speaker in favour of Ritabrata Banerjee. Dutta warned that unless the party leadership addresses the growing unrest, the TMC risks losing its political relevance and becoming merely a “signboard.”
