Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Indonesia’s highest civilian honour during his visit to Jakarta
July 7, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was awarded Indonesia’s highest civilian honour, the Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia, during his official visit to Jakarta on Tuesday. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto presented the prestigious honour, which recognises exceptional contributions to the unity, continuity and prosperity of Indonesia. PM Modi arrived in Indonesia on Monday as part of his three-nation tour that also includes Australia and New Zealand.
The visit is expected to strengthen India-Indonesia ties across key strategic sectors, including defence, maritime security, trade, technology and critical minerals. One of the major proposals under discussion is the joint development of Indonesia’s Sabang Port near the Strait of Malacca, a move aimed at enhancing India’s maritime presence in the Indo-Pacific and improving logistics cooperation between the two countries.
Defence cooperation is also expected to expand, with Indonesia likely to procure additional BrahMos missile systems and India’s indigenous Astra Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM). Both countries are also exploring partnerships in critical minerals, including investments in steel, nickel and rare earth manufacturing, while India is expected to assist Indonesia in developing customised electronic voting machines, further strengthening bilateral technological collaboration.
