Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visits to Australia and New Zealand are expected to strengthen cooperation in defence

July 8, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visits to Australia on July 9–10 and New Zealand on July 10–11 come at a time when the Indo-Pacific has become a key centre of global economic and strategic activity. India is seeking trusted partners to strengthen its economic growth, technological capabilities and national security while maintaining its strategic autonomy. Australia has emerged as one of India’s closest strategic partners through cooperation in the Quad, maritime security, defence, critical minerals and clean energy. During the visit, both countries are expected to expand collaboration in defence, space, maritime security, renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

Economic cooperation is also expected to receive a major boost. Bilateral trade between India and Australia has crossed USD 25 billion annually, supported by the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement, while investments have reached nearly USD 48 billion. Australia remains an important supplier of critical minerals essential for electric vehicles, semiconductors and renewable energy. The two sides are also expected to sign agreements covering clean energy, technology, education, skill development and economic cooperation, while discussions on a broader trade agreement are likely to continue.

Modi’s visit to New Zealand, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in decades, is expected to open a new chapter in bilateral ties. The recently concluded India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement provides momentum for expanding cooperation in agriculture, education, research, innovation and investment. Leaders are also expected to focus on emerging technologies, resilient supply chains and stronger people-to-people ties, supported by a growing Indian diaspora, increasing student exchanges and tourism. The visits underline India’s broader strategy of building stronger partnerships across the Indo-Pacific.
