Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assured traders that Sadar Bazaar will not be relocated

July 8, 2026: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has dismissed speculation about the relocation of Sadar Bazaar, clarifying that the government has no proposal to shift the iconic wholesale market. During a meeting with representatives of various trader associations, Gupta assured them that the priority is to preserve the market’s heritage while improving its infrastructure and overall functioning. Traders said the clarification has eased concerns after weeks of uncertainty caused by relocation rumours.

The meeting also focused on major civic issues affecting the market, including waterlogging, traffic congestion, encroachments, ageing infrastructure and unreliable power systems. Traders highlighted the dangers posed by overhead electricity wires, which have contributed to several fire incidents in recent years. The chief minister said the government would work with relevant departments to prepare a comprehensive development plan and examine the feasibility of laying underground power cables and improving the drainage system.

Gupta also urged market associations to submit detailed proposals for beautification and infrastructure development based on local requirements. The suggested plans will cover sanitation, traffic management, cleanliness, waterlogging solutions and modernisation of civic facilities. Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the chief minister said Delhi’s major commercial markets will be made safer, better organised and more modern with the active cooperation of the trading community.
