The Trinamool Congress has accused authorities of blocking a planned sit-in protest in Kolkata
June 1, 2026: A political controversy has erupted in Kolkata ahead of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s proposed sit-in protest scheduled for June 2. The TMC has alleged that police denied permission for the programme at Rani Rashmoni Avenue, a prominent venue often used for political gatherings and demonstrations in the city.
Party workers had already begun preparations for the protest, with stage construction materials delivered to the site. However, police later intervened and removed the materials, citing the absence of official permission for the event. The materials were subsequently shifted to another location. TMC leaders have accused the administration of obstructing a democratic protest, while police have not yet issued a detailed explanation regarding the decision.
The proposed demonstration is being organised to protest alleged attacks on TMC leaders and workers, including recent incidents involving party MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. With uncertainty over the venue and official approval, attention is now focused on whether Mamata Banerjee will proceed with the programme and how authorities will respond if the protest is held without permission.
