The Akal Takht raised objections over the state’s anti-sacrilege law, while the SGPC considered legal action

June 29, 2026: All Sikh MLAs, including ministers from Punjab’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and legislators from other political parties, appeared before the Akal Takht at the Golden Temple after being summoned over the state’s anti-sacrilege law. The religious body questioned the manner in which the legislation was enacted, stating that neither the Akal Takht nor the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) was consulted before the law was passed.

The Akal Takht also expressed concerns over provisions related to monitoring copies of the Guru Granth Sahib. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann did not appear before the religious body, as he has already been declared socially boycotted by the SGPC over the controversy. AAP legislators submitted a written explanation, maintaining that the new legislation only amends the existing 2008 anti-sacrilege law.

The issue has continued to trigger political debate in Punjab, with opposition parties targeting the state government over the legislation. Meanwhile, the SGPC is considering legal action against the law, keeping the controversy alive as discussions over religious consultation and legislative authority continue.
