Congress leader raises concerns over environmental damage and tribal rights, says issue will be taken up in Parliament

April 29, 2026: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday criticised the proposed Great Nicobar project at Campbell Bay in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, calling it one of the “biggest scams” and a grave threat to the country’s natural and tribal heritage. After visiting the region, he claimed the project would lead to the clearing of vast rainforest areas, describing it as “destruction dressed in development’s language.”

Gandhi said the plan could result in the loss of millions of trees across nearly 160 sq km of forest and alleged that local communities have not been adequately consulted. He added that both Adivasi groups and settlers are being deprived of their rights and livelihoods. During his visit, he met members of the Nicobarese tribal community and said many residents opposed the project, raising concerns about compensation, transparency, and environmental impact.

The Centre, however, maintains that the ₹81,000 crore project—which includes a transhipment terminal, power plant, and township—will boost connectivity, trade, and national security. Gandhi also alleged corporate influence in the region and said he would raise the matter in Parliament, urging wider public awareness about what he described as a major ecological and social issue.
