July 19, 2026: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Ladakh on July 26 to attend the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations at Dras, commemorating India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War. The annual event honours the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who recaptured strategic mountain positions occupied by Pakistani intruders after they crossed the Line of Control (LoC) in the Kargil sector.

The Kargil conflict erupted just months after the Lahore Declaration, when thousands of Pakistani intruders infiltrated Indian territory and occupied commanding heights overlooking the strategic Srinagar-Leh highway. The war not only resulted in India’s military victory but also prompted sweeping reforms in the country’s intelligence network, border management systems, military modernisation and overall defence preparedness.

The Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations continue to serve as a tribute to the armed forces and their role in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. At last year’s event, then Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi highlighted the Army’s ongoing restructuring to enhance combat effectiveness. During the 25th anniversary celebrations in 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also reaffirmed India’s resolve against cross-border terrorism while recalling Pakistan’s past military setbacks.
