The Ritabrata-led rebel faction of the Trinamool Congress announced Abhishek Banerjee’s suspension

June 22, 2026: The internal crisis within the Trinamool Congress intensified on Monday after the rebel faction led by Ritabrata formally claimed control of the party and announced the suspension of TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. During a meeting held at a hotel in New Town, Kolkata, dissident leaders and MLAs declared that their group represented the “real Trinamool Congress” and adopted a resolution removing Abhishek from the organisation with immediate effect.

Following the decision, the faction unveiled a new leadership structure. Senior leader Arup Roy was appointed President, while an 11-member National Working Committee was formed to manage party affairs. Rebel leaders asserted that the newly constituted body would now function as the legitimate leadership of the Trinamool Congress.

Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee faces additional pressure after a fresh corruption complaint was filed against him at Falta police station. BJP leader Abhijit Das alleged irregularities in the distribution of Cyclone Amphan relief funds, claiming fake beneficiaries, duplicate payments, and the possible misappropriation of over ₹47 crore. The complaint also names Abhishek’s close aide Jahangir Khan and former Falta MLA Shankar Kumar Naskar.
