The Supreme Court declined to immediately stay Sonam Raghuvanshi’s bail in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case
July 3, 2026: The Supreme Court on Friday refused to immediately stay the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the accused in the high-profile Raja Raghuvanshi murder case linked to the couple’s honeymoon in Meghalaya. Hearing a petition filed by the Meghalaya government, the apex court issued a notice on the plea and scheduled the matter for further hearing on July 10. Although the court initially indicated that it was inclined to cancel the bail, it later decided against passing any interim order after noting that Sonam had already been released from jail.
The Meghalaya government approached the Supreme Court after the Meghalaya High Court upheld an earlier order granting bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi. The High Court had affirmed a Shillong court’s April decision, prompting the state government to challenge the relief before the apex court. The Supreme Court has now sought responses from the parties while allowing the bail to remain in force for the time being.
The matter will now be heard on July 10, when the Supreme Court will examine the Meghalaya government’s plea against the bail order. Until then, Sonam Raghuvanshi will continue to remain out on bail. The case, involving the alleged murder of Raja Raghuvanshi during the couple’s honeymoon in Meghalaya, has attracted widespread public attention across the country.
