Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced that he will begin a 42-day hunger strike if members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), including its founder Abhijeet Dipke, are arrested during the group’s planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The statement comes ahead of CJP’s first major on-ground protest, scheduled to take place in the national capital on June 6.
Wangchuk’s Strong Message
In a video shared on social media, Wangchuk said he would travel from Ladakh to Delhi to attend the gathering and meet supporters. However, he warned that any action against the organisers could trigger a prolonged fast.
According to Wangchuk, if Abhijeet Dipke or other members of the organisation are detained, he will launch an indefinite hunger strike lasting up to six weeks, or 42 days. He described the move as a step he would prefer to avoid but said he was prepared to take if circumstances demanded it.
CJP’s First Public Demonstration
The protest marks the first major public mobilisation by the Cockroach Janta Party, a political satire platform founded by social media commentator and political communication strategist Abhijeet Dipke.
The gathering has been permitted by authorities and is expected to take place at Jantar Mantar, one of Delhi’s designated locations for public demonstrations.
Organisers have framed the event as a peaceful sit-in aimed at raising concerns about issues related to education and governance.
Security Tightened In Delhi
Ahead of the protest, security arrangements have been strengthened in several parts of Delhi.
Additional police personnel have reportedly been deployed around Jantar Mantar, at Indira Gandhi International Airport, and other sensitive locations to ensure law and order during the demonstration.
Authorities are closely monitoring the event due to the expected turnout and growing attention surrounding the movement.
Call For Peaceful Participation
After arriving in India, Dipke appealed to supporters to maintain peace and discipline throughout the demonstration.
He encouraged participants to carry the Indian tricolour and books as symbols of the movement while urging them to interact respectfully with law enforcement personnel. Organisers have also advised attendees to remain hydrated, wear caps, apply sunscreen, and follow all public safety guidelines during the gathering.
The organisers have repeatedly stressed that the protest is intended to remain peaceful and non-violent.
Why Is The Protest Being Held?
According to CJP representatives, the demonstration is focused on concerns regarding India’s education system.
Dipke has called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging that shortcomings in the education system have affected millions of students across the country.
The protest seeks to draw public attention to these concerns through a peaceful sit-in and public participation.
What Happens Next?
With Wangchuk’s announcement adding further attention to the event, the protest has gained significant visibility ahead of its start.
Whether the gathering remains a symbolic demonstration or develops into a larger movement may depend on participation levels, the response of authorities, and the outcomes of discussions surrounding the issues being raised.
For now, all eyes remain on Jantar Mantar as organisers, supporters, and officials prepare for the demonstration.
