The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recently issued several weather warnings for the national capital. Residents should prepare for a mix of ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ alerts across different districts. Southwest Delhi is currently under an orange alert, which means the area could face strong winds reaching 60 kmph. These winds will likely come with lightning and sudden rain showers.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert is in place for most other areas, including north, northwest, and southeast Delhi. Even though the heat is decreasing, these pre-monsoon activities can be unpredictable. Consequently, the government is asking people to stay cautious. Sudden dust storms can lower visibility on the roads and affect air quality very quickly.
Understanding the Sudden Change in Weather
Many residents are wondering why the weather shifted so fast. Experts say a strong cyclonic circulation is moving over central Pakistan. This system also covers parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab. Because of this movement, moisture and dust are traveling from the desert regions straight toward Delhi.
This weather pattern acts like a giant vacuum, pulling in air and moisture. Therefore, we are seeing dark clouds and gusty winds instead of the usual clear, hot summer skies. While the dust might be a nuisance, the moisture is finally bringing the temperatures down.
What to Expect From the Weather Today
If you are heading out, you should prepare for a few specific changes. The weather today will feel much cooler than earlier this week.
- Cooler Temperatures: Initially, forecasters thought the heat would hit 41°C today. However, the current cloud cover means the temperature will likely stay around 38°C.
- Strong Winds: You can expect steady surface winds between 30 and 40 kmph. During a thunderstorm, these gusts might spike to 60 kmph, so be careful near trees or billboards.
- Visibility and Air Quality: Rain usually cleans the air, but the dust comes first. As a result, there might be a temporary drop in air quality and visibility before the rain settles everything down.
