Heavy Rain Disrupted Mumbai Earlier This Week

Mumbai experienced its first major spell of monsoon rain on Wednesday, June 24, leading to severe disruptions across the city.

Heavy rainfall inundated several low-lying areas, causing flooding that affected both road and suburban rail traffic during the morning rush hour. Thousands of commuters faced delays as waterlogging brought normal life to a temporary standstill.

Some parts of Mumbai recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 am.

Among the highest rainfall figures:

  • Malvani (Western Suburbs): 340 mm
  • Parel (Central Mumbai): 334 mm

The rainfall intensity eased later in the day. Between 8 am and 2 pm, the recorded rainfall was:

  • Island City: 12 mm
  • Eastern Suburbs: 6 mm
  • Western Suburbs: 7 mm

Monsoon Arrived Nearly Two Weeks Late

The southwest monsoon officially reached Mumbai on Tuesday, arriving 13 days later than its normal onset date.

Following its arrival, the city witnessed intense rainfall that marked the beginning of the 2026 monsoon season. Weather agencies expect intermittent showers to continue over the coming days as monsoon conditions remain favourable across the Konkan region.
