Vijay has ordered immediate renovation and infrastructure upgrades at Amma Unavagam canteens to improve hygiene, food quality
May 18, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has directed officials to begin large-scale renovation and modernisation of Amma Unavagam canteens operating across the state. According to an official release, the Chief Minister reviewed the functioning of the welfare scheme and observed that many centres required urgent repairs and upgraded facilities.
At present, 620 Amma canteens are functioning across Tamil Nadu, including 383 in municipal corporation areas and 237 in municipalities and town panchayats. The government has instructed local bodies to replace damaged utensils, modernise kitchens, procure new cooking equipment and improve overall maintenance standards to ensure hygienic and efficient food preparation.
The administration has also been directed to closely monitor food quality and cleanliness standards while resolving public complaints quickly. Amma canteens continue to serve affordable meals to thousands of daily wage workers, urban labourers and economically weaker sections across the state, making the scheme one of Tamil Nadu’s major welfare initiatives.
