Polling in Hooghly turns tense as TMC and ISF supporters clash over alleged voter obstruction, even as voting continues across West Bengal

April 29, 2026: Clashes broke out in Hooghly during polling between supporters of the All India Trinamool Congress and the Indian Secular Front. The confrontation reportedly began over issues related to polling agents and alleged obstruction of voters, quickly escalating into physical altercations between workers from both sides. The situation raised concerns over law and order at polling stations.

The ISF, which is in alliance with the Left in West Bengal politics, has had limited electoral success, with its notable win in the Bhangar constituency in 2021. In Hooghly, both sides accused each other of interfering in the voting process and restricting voter access, further intensifying tensions during polling hours.

Despite the unrest, voting continued across the region, with contrasting scenes emerging from polling stations. While some areas reported clashes and tension, others saw voters turning out in large numbers, even braving heavy rain to cast their ballots. The incident highlights the highly competitive and often tense nature of elections in West Bengal.
