May 1, 2026: The Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee has approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to include West Bengal state government employees as counting supervisors in the upcoming assembly elections. The move comes after the Calcutta High Court rejected the party’s plea challenging the Election Commission’s decision.
The Election Commission, through the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer, has mandated that only Central government or PSU employees be deployed as counting supervisors at each table during vote counting scheduled for May 4. The rule has sparked objections from the ruling party in the state.
The TMC argued that the restriction limits participation of state employees in the electoral process, prompting its legal challenge after the High Court upheld the Commission’s directive.
