Actor-turned-politician Koel Mallick has resigned from the Rajya Sabha, becoming the fourth Trinamool Congress MP to step down from the Upper House in recent months.

July 16, 2026: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Rukmini Mallick, popularly known as Koel Mallick, has resigned from the Upper House, becoming the fourth TMC member to step down from the Rajya Sabha. Her resignation follows the exits of Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Prakash Chik Baraik, and Sushmita Deb. The party has not disclosed the reason behind her decision, and no official statement has been issued regarding the vacancy.

Koel Mallick is one of the most celebrated actors in the Bengali film industry, with a career spanning more than two decades. The daughter of veteran actor Ranjit Mallick, she made her acting debut in 2003 with Nater Guru and went on to star in several successful films, including Shubhodrishti, 100% Love, Paglu, and Hemlock Society. She entered politics earlier this year after being nominated by the TMC for the 2026 Rajya Sabha elections from West Bengal and was elected unopposed before taking oath in April.

With Mallick’s resignation, the number of TMC MPs quitting the Rajya Sabha in recent months has risen to four, raising questions over the party’s representation in the Upper House. However, the TMC has remained silent on the reasons behind her resignation and has not yet indicated who will be nominated to fill the vacant Rajya Sabha seat.
