BJP MP Saumitra Khan claimed that several Trinamool Congress MLAs and MPs are ready to join the BJP
May 27, 2026: Fresh political tensions erupted in West Bengal after BJP MP Saumitra Khan claimed that dozens of Trinamool Congress leaders were prepared to defect to the BJP. Khan alleged that nearly 50 TMC MLAs and around 20 MPs were unhappy within the party and waiting for approval from the BJP’s central leadership before switching sides. He further claimed that if the BJP high command gave the signal, the Trinamool Congress could face a major political collapse in the state.
The BJP leader also launched a sharp attack on TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, further escalating the political confrontation. Senior TMC MP Sougata Roy strongly rejected Khan’s allegations and accused the BJP of spreading misinformation. Roy maintained that there was no possibility of mass defections and dismissed the claims as politically motivated statements aimed at creating instability within the ruling party.
The controversy comes amid visible unrest inside the Trinamool Congress following recent election setbacks, municipal resignations, and corruption-related investigations involving party leaders. Speculation intensified after Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar attended a meeting chaired by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, while nearly 100 councillors reportedly resigned across multiple municipalities. The political pressure has further increased after former minister Sujit Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a civic recruitment case, adding to the growing turmoil within Bengal politics.
