Rescue teams race against time after an under-construction warehouse roof collapsed in Kolkata’s Taratala area
June 24, 2026: A major construction accident occurred in Kolkata’s Taratala area after the roof of an under-construction warehouse collapsed on Transport Road, trapping multiple workers beneath the rubble. Authorities believe that around 50 to 60 labourers may have been present at the site when the structure suddenly gave way during routine construction work. The incident triggered panic as workers scrambled for safety while others became trapped under the debris.
Emergency response teams rushed to the location and launched an intensive rescue operation. Officials confirmed that at least four workers have been rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue personnel continue to hear voices from beneath the rubble and are attempting to establish contact with those still trapped by calling out their names and searching through the debris.
Multiple agencies, including Kolkata Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Civil Defence teams, Disaster Management authorities and specialised rescue units, have been deployed at the site. Heavy cranes and machinery are being used to clear debris, while drones are assisting in assessing structural conditions. The incident has also raised concerns about construction safety standards, with authorities expected to investigate whether the project complied with required engineering and legal regulations.
