A wave of resignations and defections has intensified the Trinamool Congress crisis

June 11, 2026: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is facing one of the biggest crises in its history, as several rebel leaders continue to distance themselves from the party. Many of the dissidents have openly blamed alleged corruption and the growing influence of Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, for the unrest. The rebellion has created a major challenge for the party that governed West Bengal for three consecutive terms.

The crisis deepened this week after Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Upper House, becoming the third TMC MP to quit in recent days. His resignation followed the departure of Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, who announced her exit from both Parliament and the party. Earlier, senior leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray also resigned from the Rajya Sabha, alleging “unbridled corruption” and “anarchical rule” within the TMC.

The party is also witnessing serious divisions within the West Bengal Assembly. A group of 58 MLAs has reportedly backed rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee, who has staked claim to the Leader of the Opposition post. Meanwhile, MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has expressed support for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), claiming that she has the backing of 19 MPs — a number that could help the group avoid anti-defection provisions. The developments have intensified concerns over the future of the TMC and Mamata Banerjee’s leadership.
