Tanmoy Ghosh criticised the FIR filed against Abhishek Banerjee, calling the action politically selective and unfair.
May 17, 2026: A fresh political controversy erupted in West Bengal after Tanmoy Ghosh defended Abhishek Banerjee following the registration of an FIR against the TMC general secretary over alleged inflammatory remarks made during election rallies. Ghosh claimed that leaders from the BJP had also made provocative statements in the past and questioned why action was being taken only against Banerjee.
The FIR was registered at the Bidhannagar North Cyber Crime Police Station based on a complaint alleging that Banerjee made provocative and threatening speeches during political rallies in places including Maheshtala, Arambagh, Haringhata and Nandigram. The complaint accused him of promoting enmity, disturbing public tranquillity and inciting unrest through speeches and social media posts from his official Facebook account.
According to the FIR, cases have been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The remarks in question reportedly included comments related to DJs and statements directed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The development has intensified the political confrontation between the ruling TMC and the BJP in the state.
