India’s much-hyped teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has endured a challenging start to his international career, with scores of 14, 13 and 15 in the ongoing T20I series against England. While the 15-year-old continues to enjoy the confidence of the team management, his struggles against short-pitched bowling have become a major talking point after India conceded the five-match series.
England sealed the series with a dominant nine-wicket victory in the fourth T20I, taking an unassailable 3-1 lead. Following the defeat, India head coach Gautam Gambhir and assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak were seen engaged in a lengthy discussion with Sooryavanshi, highlighting the team’s efforts to help the youngster adapt at the highest level.
BCCI Keeping Close Watch on Aggressive Batting Style
According to a source quoted by ANI, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely evaluating India’s performances during the series, with particular focus on the ultra-aggressive opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The source acknowledged that while both batters possess exceptional six-hitting ability, a more balanced approach may be required.
“The six-hitting ability of Abhishek and Sooryavanshi is great but needs to be controlled,” the BCCI source said.
The comment comes after England repeatedly exposed Sooryavanshi’s vulnerability against the short ball, dismissing him cheaply in each of his three innings.
Replacing Sanju Samson Added to the Pressure
The spotlight on Sooryavanshi has been even brighter because he replaced Sanju Samson, who was the Player of the Tournament during India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
Although the teenager has not produced the explosive performances that made him one of India’s brightest young prospects, team management has continued to back him despite the disappointing returns.
It is also worth noting that India’s batting unit has collectively underperformed during the series, meaning Sooryavanshi has not been the only player to struggle.
Record-Breaking Debut at Just 15
Sooryavanshi made history in the second T20I by becoming India’s youngest-ever international cricketer, debuting at 15 years and 99 days, breaking the record held by Sachin Tendulkar since 1989.
Despite the difficult introduction to international cricket, the youngster’s remarkable domestic performances remain the primary reason for the faith shown in him by selectors.

- Named Most Valuable Player
- Awarded Emerging Player
- Claimed the Super Striker and Super Sixes awards
Across his IPL career so far, the youngster has amassed:
- 1,028 runs in 23 matches
- Average: 44.69
- Strike rate: 228.95
- Two centuries

Continued Success Before International Debut
Before receiving his maiden India call-up, Sooryavanshi also impressed in the recent tri-nation A-team tournament in Sri Lanka.
He scored 211 runs in five innings at an average of 42.20 and a strike rate of nearly 201, including a best score of 94. He also smashed the fastest List A fifty in just 11 balls against Sri Lanka A before finishing the tournament strongly with a half-century in the final.
Learning Curve Begins
While the early hype surrounding Sooryavanshi has cooled following three low scores, the BCCI and Indian team management appear committed to giving the teenage prodigy time to develop.
With England successfully exposing areas that require improvement, particularly against short-pitched bowling, the coming matches could prove crucial in shaping the next phase of one of Indian cricket’s most exciting young careers.
