BCCI to Review India’s Poor T20I Performances After England Tour, No Immediate Decision on Gautam Gambhir

India’s disappointing run in T20 Internationals has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to schedule a performance review after the ongoing ODI series against England. Despite winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year, India have now suffered back-to-back T20I series defeats against Ireland and England.

The review meeting is expected to take place after the ODI series concludes on July 19. However, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has made it clear that the board will not take any hasty decisions regarding the team’s coaching staff or leadership.

India Endure Difficult Start Under Shreyas Iyer

India’s transition period began with the T20I series against Ireland in late June. Since then, the team has struggled to find momentum under new captain Shreyas Iyer.

The Men in Blue lost the Ireland series 0-2 and are currently trailing England 0-3, with one match still remaining. As a result, India are yet to register a T20I victory under their new captain.

Although the performances have raised concerns, the BCCI believes the current slump is part of a challenging phase rather than a long-term crisis.

BCCI Rules Out Knee-Jerk Decisions

Speaking on the sidelines of the ICC Annual Conference in Edinburgh, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that a review meeting will be held once the England tour ends.

He said the board is closely monitoring the team’s performances but has no plans to react impulsively.

According to Saikia, the review will focus only on cricketing issues and identifying areas that need improvement.

He described India’s recent performances as a “bad phase” and added that such periods are common in international cricket.

The BCCI expects the team to regain confidence during the ODI series before conducting a detailed assessment after the tour.

Gautam Gambhir’s Position Remains Secure

Despite India’s poor T20I results, there is currently no immediate threat to head coach Gautam Gambhir’s future.

Gambhir remains under contract with the BCCI until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Therefore, the upcoming meeting is expected to focus on improving team performance instead of discussing changes in the coaching setup.

The review is likely to include Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer may not be available because he is expected to travel to Zimbabwe for the upcoming T20I series.

Questions Likely to Be Raised During Review

Although Gambhir’s position appears safe, the review meeting is expected to examine several cricketing decisions taken during the recent T20I series.

One major talking point could be the handling of Sanju Samson. His omission from the Zimbabwe squad and his exclusion from the playing XI during the England series have sparked widespread debate.

Earlier, Gambhir had reportedly assured Samson that he would continue receiving opportunities despite failures. However, his removal from the team after a few poor outings has raised questions about consistency in communication.

Another issue that could come under discussion is India’s constant changes to the playing XI.

Across the Ireland and England tours, India fielded a different team in every completed T20I. As a result, several players struggled to settle into defined roles.

The management’s preference for batting depth until No. 8 and the continued inclusion of certain all-rounders may also be reviewed as the team looks for a better balance.

Recent Results Increase Pressure

India’s recent record under Gautam Gambhir has featured several disappointing results.

The team suffered a 0-3 Test series whitewash at home against New Zealand, lost an ODI series at home to the same opponents, endured their first-ever T20I series defeat against Ireland, and now face the possibility of a 0-4 defeat against England.

Even so, the BCCI believes that one difficult phase should not overshadow Gambhir’s achievements, including guiding India to a successful T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year.

Former Cricketer Urges Patience

Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta believes the team management should be given time during this transition period.

According to him, experimenting with young players is necessary, especially with two years remaining before the next major ICC tournament.

He also pointed out that playing T20 cricket in England requires a different approach compared to India, as conditions demand greater patience during the Powerplay instead of aggressive stroke play from the start.

As India continue rebuilding their T20I squad, the upcoming BCCI review is expected to focus on long-term improvements rather than immediate changes.
