Erling Haaland announced his arrival on football’s biggest stage in style, scoring twice as Norway defeated Iraq 3-1 in their opening Group I match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The Manchester City striker delivered a match-winning performance and immediately joined the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot. His brace came just hours after Kylian Mbappé scored twice for France against Senegal.

For Norway, the victory marked a successful return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence.

Norway’s Star Power Makes the Difference

Norway entered the tournament carrying high expectations thanks to a talented generation led by Haaland and captain Martin Ødegaard.

While Ødegaard had a relatively quiet game, Haaland once again proved why he is regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous strikers.

Before the match, Norway coach Ståle Solbakken described Haaland as the best goalscorer in world football.

The striker, however, remained modest and pointed out that both Mbappe and Harry Kane scored more goals than him during the 2025-26 season.

Still, his performance against Iraq showed exactly why defenders fear facing him.

Haaland Opens His World Cup Account

Norway started brightly and nearly took the lead within minutes.

Antonio Nusa caused constant problems for Iraq’s defence with his pace and creativity. Haaland also threatened early, although his first opportunities went unfinished.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 29th minute.

Nusa released David Møller Wolfe down the left flank. The defender delivered a perfect cross to the far post where Haaland was waiting to tap home from close range.

The goal continued Haaland’s remarkable scoring record for Norway.

Iraq Produce a Historic Response

Despite falling behind, Iraq refused to back down.

The underdogs created several opportunities and were rewarded with a memorable equaliser before halftime.

Ali Jassim started the move before Amir Al-Ammari delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area.

Captain Aymen Hussein rose above Norway’s defenders and powered a brilliant header past goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

The goal sparked huge celebrations among Iraqi players and supporters. It was only Iraq’s second goal in World Cup history and one of the most significant moments for the national team on the global stage.

Goalkeeper Error Gifts Haaland Another Goal

Iraq’s joy lasted only a few minutes.

A costly mistake from veteran goalkeeper Jalal Hassan handed Haaland his second goal of the night.

After receiving a back-pass, Hassan hesitated while clearing the ball. Haaland immediately sensed the danger and closed him down.

The goalkeeper’s attempted clearance struck Haaland and bounced into the net, restoring Norway’s lead before halftime.

The goal highlighted the striker’s relentless work rate and sharp instincts inside the final third.

Norway Seal the Victory Late On

Iraq remained competitive throughout the second half and created chances to equalise once again.

However, Norway’s quality eventually secured the result.

Deep into stoppage time, defender Kristoffer Ajer delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Under pressure from Kristian Thorstvedt, Iraq captain Aymen Hussein accidentally turned the ball into his own net.

The unfortunate own goal completed a 3-1 victory for Norway.

Group I Takes Shape

The result puts Norway in a strong position after the opening round of Group I matches.

France currently leads the group after their 3-1 win over Senegal, while Norway sits level on points following their victory over Iraq.

A blockbuster clash between France and Norway later in the group stage is already generating excitement, especially with Mbappe and Haaland both starting the tournament in outstanding form.

If Norway hopes to make a deep run in the competition, Haaland’s goals will remain their biggest weapon.
