FIFA has officially partnered with Zee Entertainment to broadcast the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India, ending months of uncertainty over television and digital rights in one of the world’s largest media markets.

The agreement ensures that football fans across India will be able to watch the tournament, which begins on June 11 and will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Although the financial details of the deal were not disclosed, reports suggest that FIFA had significantly reduced its initial asking price before reaching an agreement with Zee.

FIFA Reduced Its Asking Price to Close the Deal

According to earlier reports, FIFA initially sought around $100 million for the Indian media rights package covering both the 2026 and 2030 FIFA World Cups.

However, interest from broadcasters remained limited. As a result, FIFA reportedly lowered its expectations and reduced the asking price to approximately $60 million.

The move helped revive negotiations and eventually led to a successful agreement with Zee Entertainment.

Major Boost for Zee in Sports Broadcasting

The deal marks an important step for Zee Entertainment as it looks to strengthen its position in India’s highly competitive sports broadcasting industry.

Currently, the market is dominated by the Reliance-Disney joint venture, JioStar, which owns rights to several premium sporting events. These include the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the English Premier League.

By securing FIFA rights, Zee gains access to one of the biggest sporting events in the world and expands its sports content portfolio significantly.

Following the announcement, Zee Entertainment shares rose nearly 7 percent during trading, reflecting positive investor sentiment.

Why Broadcasters Were Hesitant This Time

Unlike the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which offered viewer-friendly match timings for Indian audiences, the 2026 tournament presents a different challenge.

Since matches will be played in North America, many games will be broadcast late at night in India due to the significant time difference.

Consequently, broadcasters were cautious about making large investments because late-night scheduling could affect television ratings and advertising revenue.

This factor reportedly played a major role in slowing down negotiations and reducing competition for the rights package.

JioStar and Sony Also Explored the Opportunity

Industry reports indicate that JioStar, which broadcast the 2022 FIFA World Cup through its predecessor Viacom18, showed interest in the rights.

The company reportedly offered around $20 million, but FIFA did not accept the proposal.

Meanwhile, Sony, which previously held FIFA World Cup broadcasting rights for the 2014 and 2018 tournaments in India, also held discussions regarding the package. However, the broadcaster ultimately chose not to submit a formal bid.

Interestingly, Viacom18 had paid nearly $60 million for the rights to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, highlighting the difference in market conditions between the two tournaments.

Deal Covers Multiple FIFA Events Until 2034

The partnership extends far beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to the joint announcement from FIFA and Zee Entertainment, the agreement includes rights to 39 FIFA events over the next eight years, running through 2034.

The package also includes major international tournaments such as the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, giving Zee long-term access to global football content.

As a result, the broadcaster will play a significant role in bringing FIFA competitions to Indian audiences for years to come.

What This Means for Indian Football Fans

The agreement removes uncertainty surrounding the availability of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India.

Fans can now look forward to watching the world’s biggest football tournament through Zee’s broadcasting platforms. Furthermore, the long-term partnership means viewers will have access to several FIFA events beyond the men’s World Cup.

With the tournament only days away, the deal ensures that millions of football supporters across India will not miss any of the action from North America.
