India’s T20 team selection is set to generate plenty of discussion as the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee prepares to meet in Mumbai on Saturday.
The selectors will choose squads for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England. India will play two T20Is in Ireland during June before heading to England for a five-match series in July.
Apart from these tours, the panel will also discuss squad selection for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, scheduled for September.
With India’s series against West Indies taking place around the same time, selectors must decide whether to send a full-strength squad to the Asian Games, where a medal remains a major objective.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Captaincy Under Focus
One of the biggest questions revolves around the future of India’s T20 captaincy.
Despite leading India to a successful T20 World Cup title defense, Suryakumar Yadav’s batting performances have come under scrutiny in recent months.
During IPL 2026, he scored 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54. While those numbers are respectable, they fell short of expectations for one of the format’s most explosive batters.
His World Cup campaign also raised concerns. Suryakumar scored 242 runs in nine innings, with a strike rate of 136.72. His standout performance came against the USA, where he remained unbeaten on 84 and earned the Player of the Match award.
Moreover, Suryakumar will turn 36 later this year. He was also not included among the 30 players named in India’s provisional squad for the upcoming Asian Games.
Although he has publicly stated his desire to represent India at the 2028 Olympics, selectors may consider whether it is time to hand leadership duties to a younger player.
However, his experience could still make him a valuable member of the squad even if captaincy changes hands.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Set for India Call-Up
Fifteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi appears to be one of the strongest contenders for a maiden India call-up.
The young batter impressed everyone during his first full IPL season. His fearless strokeplay and ability to handle pressure situations have reportedly convinced selectors that he deserves an opportunity at the international level.
The challenge, however, lies in finding room for him in the playing XI.
India’s World Cup-winning top order featured Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan. Therefore, selectors may choose a rotation policy to give Sooryavanshi valuable exposure without disrupting a settled combination.
A debut during the Ireland series could be the ideal platform for the teenager to showcase his talent.

Another major selection debate concerns Shreyas Iyer and Rajat Patidar.
Both players have enhanced their reputations through outstanding leadership performances in the IPL.
Shreyas has enjoyed remarkable success as captain across multiple franchises. After leading Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024, he continued to impress with Punjab Kings, guiding them to another strong campaign.
Many observers believe he is among the leading candidates to become India’s next T20 captain.
Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar strengthened his credentials by helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure back-to-back IPL titles. His calm leadership and consistent batting made him one of the standout performers of the season.
The difficulty for selectors is that both players compete for similar middle-order positions. As a result, there may only be room for one of them in the final squad.
Uncertainty Over Hardik Pandya’s Role
Hardik Pandya’s place in India’s T20 plans is also likely to be discussed extensively.
The all-rounder endured another difficult IPL season, with injuries once again affecting his campaign. Back spasms limited his impact, while Mumbai Indians continued to struggle under his leadership.
Despite those setbacks, Hardik remains a proven performer for India in major tournaments.
The selectors are expected to keep monitoring his fitness closely. Having already included him in the ODI squad for the Afghanistan series, they want to assess whether he can consistently contribute with both bat and ball.
Fitness remains a key concern as India builds toward the 2027 ODI World Cup.
In the shorter format, alternatives such as Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube could receive greater opportunities if selectors decide to manage Hardik’s workload.
