World No. 1 Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon title with a thrilling 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alexander Zverev in Sunday’s men’s singles final, capturing his fifth Grand Slam title and further cementing his place among tennis’ modern greats.

The 24-year-old Italian, who became the first man from Italy to win the Wimbledon singles title in 2025, is now one of only 10 players in the Open Era to successfully defend the prestigious championship.

Sinner Extends Dominance Over Zverev

The victory also continued Sinner’s remarkable dominance over Zverev, marking his 10th consecutive win against the German.

Playing in his maiden Wimbledon final just weeks after winning the French Open, Zverev produced an outstanding display on grass. The second seed served superbly, claimed a tightly contested opening-set tie-break and snapped Sinner’s streak of 14 consecutive sets won against him.

However, Sinner responded like a champion.

The Italian dominated the second-set tie-break before seizing complete control in the third set. At 3-3, Zverev slipped while chasing a drop shot on his first break-point opportunity of the match. Although he continued, Sinner capitalised by earning his first service break and never looked back.

In the fourth set, the defending champion broke serve to move 4-3 ahead before producing a spectacular 23-shot rally to earn championship point. He sealed victory with a forehand winner after three hours and 46 minutes on Centre Court.

Historic Milestones for the World No. 1

The triumph marked several significant milestones for Sinner:

  • Successfully defended his Wimbledon title.
  • Won his fifth Grand Slam championship.
  • Registered his 100th Grand Slam match victory.
  • Became one of only 10 men in the Open Era to retain the Wimbledon men’s singles title.

The latest success further strengthened his position as the world’s top-ranked player and one of the dominant forces in men’s tennis.

Zverev Enjoys Best Grand Slam Season

Despite falling short in his fourth Grand Slam final, Zverev completed the strongest major campaign of his career.

After lifting the French Open title and reaching his first Wimbledon final, the German is set to climb to World No. 2, underlining his impressive consistency across the biggest tournaments.

Sinner Joins Elite Company Before Turning 25

Sinner turns 25 on August 16, 2026, but even before reaching that milestone, he has already built a résumé comparable to some of tennis’ greatest players.

New Era of Men’s Tennis

Sinner’s fifth Grand Slam title before turning 25 further strengthens comparisons with Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, while reinforcing his growing rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz.

Over the past few seasons, Sinner and Alcaraz have emerged as the leading figures of the post-Big Three era, consistently sharing the sport’s biggest titles and shaping the future of men’s tennis.

While matching the legendary career records of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic remains a formidable challenge, Sinner’s rapid rise suggests he is firmly on course to become one of the defining players of his generation.
