The FIFA World Cup 2026 is creating unforgettable moments on the pitch. However, for Dr. Nasser Mohamed, the tournament has become a platform to share a much deeper message about acceptance, identity, and human connection.

Dressed in a traditional Qatari bisht decorated with rainbow-colored details, Dr. Mohamed walked through crowds outside San Francisco’s Chase Center while fans gathered to watch the England vs Croatia World Cup match. His appearance immediately drew attention, but his goal was simple.

According to Mohamed, the power of the World Cup lies in allowing people to be seen without needing lengthy explanations. He believes visibility itself can start important conversations.

A Rare Voice From Qatar’s LGBTQ Community

Dr. Mohamed became internationally known during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar when he publicly came out as gay. At the time, he was already living in San Francisco, far from his homeland.

Now 39 years old, he continues to speak openly about LGBTQ rights and inclusion. Although he still faces criticism and online abuse, he says the support he has received from people around the world has helped him remain strong.

Living in San Francisco has given him the confidence to express himself freely. He now openly wears clothing and accessories that reflect his identity, something he says would not have been possible in his childhood years in Qatar.

Why the Traditional Bisht Matters

One of the most symbolic parts of Mohamed’s appearance is the traditional Qatari bisht he wears at public events.

The garment carries special meaning because it became globally famous when Qatar’s Emir placed a bisht on football legend Lionel Messi after Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

For Mohamed, wearing the same cultural symbol with rainbow details sends a message that LGBTQ individuals also deserve recognition, dignity, and celebration.

He says the outfit represents both his heritage and his personal journey.

Launching the “Love Is the Goal” Campaign

Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 and Pride Month, Mohamed launched a campaign called “Love Is the Goal.”

The campaign combines football terminology with messages about compassion and acceptance. Through videos and public appearances, Mohamed hopes to encourage understanding among people from different backgrounds.

He believes sports can unite communities and create opportunities for meaningful conversations that might not happen otherwise.

Personal Sacrifices and Family Separation

While Mohamed has built a new life in the United States, the journey has come with painful sacrifices.

He revealed that he has been completely estranged from his family. As a result, he cannot return home or reconnect with his parents despite wanting to see them.

The emotional toll became especially clear during Qatar’s World Cup match against Switzerland in California earlier this month. While attending the game, Mohamed said he struggled to hold back tears as he reflected on his connection to his homeland.

Even though he feels separated from Qatar, he still carries deep affection for the country where he grew up.

Helping Others Escape Persecution

Beyond advocacy, Mohamed works directly with vulnerable individuals seeking safety and support.

He has helped members of the LGBTQ community relocate from difficult situations and connect with resources that allow them to rebuild their lives.

According to Mohamed, every person deserves the chance to live without fear and remain connected to their family and community.

He believes creating a world where children are accepted for who they are should be a shared goal across societies.

Supporting Both Qatar and the United States

Despite the challenges he has faced, Mohamed continues to support Qatar’s national football team. At the same time, he also cheers for the United States, the country where he rebuilt his life.

He says both nations have shaped his journey in different ways. Therefore, his criticism and advocacy come from a place of care rather than anger.

As FIFA World Cup 2026 continues, Mohamed hopes his story encourages more conversations about inclusion, belonging, and respect. Through football’s biggest stage, he aims to remind people that love and understanding can cross borders just as easily as the game itself.
