Morocco strengthened their chances of reaching the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after defeating Scotland 1-0 in their Group C match at Boston Stadium on Friday.

The match was decided within the opening two minutes as Ismael Saibari scored the fastest goal of the tournament so far. His strike after just 71 seconds proved enough to separate the two sides in front of 64,146 fans in Massachusetts, United States.

Moreover, the victory moved Morocco to four points from two matches. They now sit in a strong position to qualify for the Round of 32 and continue their impressive World Cup campaign.

Ismael Saibari Makes World Cup History

Saibari continued his excellent form after scoring against Brazil in Morocco’s opening 1-1 draw.

This time, the 25-year-old needed just over a minute to make his mark. Brahim Diaz delivered a perfectly timed through ball, while Scotland defender Grant Hanley unintentionally played Saibari onside. The Moroccan midfielder controlled the pass brilliantly before firing a powerful shot beyond goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

As a result, Saibari recorded the fastest goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The midfielder has attracted plenty of attention this season. Born in Spain and raised in Belgium, he currently plays for PSV Eindhoven and is reportedly close to completing a $63 million move to Bayern Munich. His composed finish against Scotland showed exactly why Europe’s biggest clubs are interested.

Morocco Create More Chances

Although Morocco scored early, they continued to dominate large spells of the match.

The Atlas Lions looked dangerous every time they attacked. However, they failed to convert several good opportunities that could have made the scoreline more comfortable.

Bilal El Khannouss missed a clear chance in the 36th minute after Morocco opened up the Scottish defence once again.

Shortly after halftime, Saibari almost doubled his tally. His effort struck the crossbar after a clever cutback from El Khannouss. Minutes later, Angus Gunn produced an excellent save to deny El Khannouss from a header following Achraf Hakimi’s corner.

Nevertheless, Morocco remained patient and controlled possession during the closing stages to secure another valuable three points.

Scotland Struggle to Break Through

Scotland entered the match with confidence after beating Haiti 1-0 in their opening fixture. That victory had given Steve Clarke’s side hope of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

However, Morocco exposed Scotland’s defensive weaknesses almost immediately.

Clarke made three changes to his starting lineup and switched to a back five by bringing Kieran Tierney into the defence. Lawrence Shankland dropped to the bench as Scotland looked to become more solid at the back.

Even so, the tactical adjustment failed to stop Morocco’s early breakthrough.

Scotland struggled to create meaningful opportunities throughout the first half. Their first dangerous attack arrived only in stoppage time when Andy Robertson delivered a cross into the penalty area, but John McGinn could not make proper contact.

The second half brought slight improvement. Ryan Christie fired over the bar after a pass from Scott McTominay, while McTominay later hit the side netting. However, Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou rarely faced serious danger.

Morocco Close in on Qualification

With four points from two matches, Morocco are now well placed to advance to the knockout rounds.

The Atlas Lions reached the semifinals during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and have once again shown they can compete with top international teams.

Meanwhile, Scotland’s qualification hopes have become much more difficult. Another victory would have secured their place in the next round. Instead, they must now prepare for a crucial meeting with Brazil.

Morocco will face Haiti in Atlanta in their final group match, while Scotland travel to Miami for a must-win encounter against Brazil.

Why Was Achraf Hakimi Booed?

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi faced constant boos from sections of the Scottish supporters throughout the match.

The reaction came after confirmation that the Paris Saint-Germain defender will stand trial in France over rape charges, which he denies.

Earlier on Friday, Hakimi released a statement on social media saying he welcomed the opportunity to present his side of the case in court.

He wrote that he had been waiting for the trial since the beginning and believed it would allow the truth to come out.

Hakimi added that he often felt he had become “an easy target” and said the ongoing case had affected both his personal life and his family.

Despite the hostile atmosphere inside the stadium, the Moroccan captain completed the full match and helped his side secure another important World Cup victory.
