Former India batter S Badrinath has urged fans and experts to avoid placing excessive expectations on teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, expressing concern that the hype surrounding the youngster could become a burden early in his international career.
Sooryavanshi, who made his India debut during the ongoing T20I series against England, has found the transition to international cricket challenging. The 15-year-old opener has scored 14 and 13 in his first two innings after earning widespread praise following a remarkable IPL season.
Badrinath Urges Patience With Teen Star
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Badrinath said he hopes the teenager has not been overwhelmed by the enormous expectations created after his rapid rise.
While acknowledging Sooryavanshi’s exceptional talent and fearless batting, the former India cricketer cautioned that young players often experience dramatic swings in form as they continue to develop.
“I hope we have not just hyped Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He has had a great start and is a phenomenal hitter. But suddenly it’s starting to look like Jofra Archer is sorting him out. I hope he hasn’t been hyped too early because such players peak higher than others when their form is good. But the dip is also sharper for such players when the form is bad,” said Badrinath.
England Bowlers Test Sooryavanshi
The spotlight will once again be on Sooryavanshi as India attempt to recover from their heaviest-ever defeat in T20 internationals in the ongoing series against England.
The teenager enjoyed a memorable start to his international career by becoming the youngest male cricketer to represent India, surpassing the long-standing record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar.
Opening the innings on debut, Sooryavanshi made an immediate statement by smashing Jofra Archer’s very first delivery for a six, thrilling fans with his fearless approach before being dismissed for 14 off 10 balls.
However, England quickly adjusted their plans.
In the following match, Archer and the England pace attack targeted the youngster with a barrage of short-pitched deliveries. The strategy paid off as Archer dismissed Sooryavanshi for 13 runs off just five balls, exposing the teenager to one of the toughest challenges in international cricket.
IPL 2026 Heroics Earned India Call-Up
Despite his modest start for India, Sooryavanshi’s selection came on the back of one of the most extraordinary IPL campaigns by a young player.
Representing Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026, the left-handed batter amassed 776 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 237.30, registering one century and five half-centuries.
His explosive performances established him as one of India’s brightest batting prospects and fast-tracked his entry into the national side.
Long-Term Development the Priority
Badrinath’s comments reflect the growing belief that while Sooryavanshi possesses immense potential, managing expectations will be crucial for his long-term success.
With international bowlers already devising strategies to counter his aggressive style, the teenager now faces the challenge of adapting at the highest level. How he responds in the remainder of the England series could provide an early glimpse into the temperament that has made him one of Indian cricket’s most exciting young talents.
