India have suffered a major setback in their Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign after off-spinner Shreyanka Patil was ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle injury.
The 23-year-old sustained the injury during India’s second Group Stage match against the Netherlands at Headingley. As a result, she will play no further part in the competition.
Meanwhile, the tournament technical committee has approved Prema Rawat as her replacement for the remainder of the World Cup.
Injury Happened While Fielding

The injury occurred in the final over of the Powerplay when Shreyanka attempted to stop the ball inside the field.
During the effort, she twisted her ankle and immediately looked in discomfort. Medical staff rushed onto the field before taking her off for further assessment.
Subsequent medical examinations confirmed that the injury would keep her out of the tournament.
Prema Rawat Gets Her Big Opportunity

India have called up 24-year-old leg-spinner Prema Rawat, who is yet to make her international debut.
Rawat has represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women’s Premier League over the last two seasons. She has played six matches and claimed three wickets.
In domestic cricket, she played a key role in helping Uttarakhand win the Senior Women’s Championship. Besides her leg-spin, Rawat is known for her athletic fielding and useful lower-order batting, making her a valuable all-round option.
Shreyanka Leaves a Big Gap in India’s Bowling Attack

Although India have found a replacement, Shreyanka’s absence creates a significant challenge for the team.
She has been one of India’s most effective attacking bowlers against left-handed batters. In the Women’s Premier League, she also built an impressive record during the death overs, where her ability to take wickets regularly made her a dependable option.
Apart from her bowling, Shreyanka’s outstanding fielding often saved crucial runs and created wicket-taking opportunities.
Selection Dilemma Ahead of South Africa Clash
India’s team management now faces an important selection decision before the next match.
The management could hand Prema Rawat an immediate debut. However, experienced left-arm spinner Radha Yadav is also available and could strengthen the bowling attack while adding depth with the bat.
In addition, India may consider making changes to the pace attack to compensate for the tactical role Shreyanka usually played, especially during the middle and death overs.
Crucial Match Awaits India
India now have a short break before facing South Africa on June 21 at Old Trafford.
The contest is expected to be one of the most important matches of the group stage, with both teams aiming to strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout rounds.
Shreyanka’s injury is a significant setback, but India will hope that Prema Rawat or another replacement can step up when the team needs it most.
