Spain etched its name into the FIFA World Cup record books after registering a sixth consecutive clean sheet with a 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Round of 16 on Monday.

The win not only secured Spain’s place in the quarter-finals but also established a new World Cup record for the longest run of consecutive matches without conceding a goal.

Goalkeeper Unai Simon was once again at the heart of Spain’s defensive masterclass, extending his remarkable shutout streak to 609 minutes — the longest by any goalkeeper in FIFA World Cup history.

Spain Surpass Italy and Switzerland’s Record

With the victory over Portugal, Spain overtook the previous record of five successive World Cup clean sheets jointly held by Italy (1990) and Switzerland (2006-2010).

Spain’s record-breaking defensive run began during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with a goalless Round of 16 draw against Morocco. Although Morocco progressed after winning the penalty shootout, the match officially counted as a clean sheet for Spain.

The streak continued into the FIFA World Cup 2026, beginning with a surprising 0-0 draw against Cape Verde in the group stage before Spain recorded four consecutive victories without conceding to reach the last eight.

Unai Simon Breaks Legendary Goalkeeping Record

Simon had already surpassed Italian goalkeeping legend Walter Zenga’s long-standing record of 517 consecutive scoreless minutes during Spain’s 3-0 victory over Austria in the previous knockout round.

Zenga had set the benchmark during the 1990 FIFA World Cup on home soil, keeping five consecutive clean sheets for Italy.

The Spanish goalkeeper’s ongoing shutout streak dates back to the 2022 World Cup and began after Spain conceded twice in its final group-stage match, a 2-1 defeat to Japan in Qatar.

Since then, Simon has not allowed a single goal in World Cup action.

Ronaldo Tests Spain Goalkeeper

Despite Spain’s defensive dominance throughout the tournament, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo produced two of the biggest threats during Monday’s encounter at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Coming into the match, Simon had faced little pressure, having made only four saves throughout the tournament. Spain’s previous opponents, Austria, failed to register a single shot on target.

Against Portugal, however, Simon was called into action twice in the first half, denying Ronaldo on both occasions.

His standout moment came with a spectacular diving save. After João Félix’s header deflected off the shoulder of the 29-year-old Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper, Ronaldo quickly fired a follow-up effort toward goal. Simon reacted brilliantly, reaching back while still airborne to gather the ball safely with both hands and preserve Spain’s clean sheet.

With Spain’s defence continuing to frustrate opponents and Simon producing record-breaking performances between the posts, the 2026 FIFA World Cup contenders head into the quarter-finals with one of the tournament’s strongest defensive records.
