India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has etched his name into the record books after becoming the youngest player to score a fifty in men’s international cricket. The 15-year-old achieved the historic feat with a breathtaking 18-ball half-century against Zimbabwe in the opening T20 International in Harare, helping India secure a convincing seven-wicket victory and a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Following his record-breaking innings, Sooryavanshi said such performances at the beginning of a player’s career provide immense confidence for future matches. Reflecting on his remarkable knock, the young batter explained that he remained calm, trusted his natural game, and focused on playing to his strengths throughout the innings.
“When you are in the starting phase of your career, and you get such an innings at the start, you get confidence for the next matches. It felt like I was in my zone and I backed my own strength,” Sooryavanshi said in a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
At just 15 years and 118 days, Sooryavanshi surpassed a long-standing record held by Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who was 16 years and 213 days old when he scored his maiden international fifty against Pakistan in a Test match at Faisalabad in 1989. The achievement marks another milestone in the teenager’s rapidly rising cricket career.
Harare has become a memorable venue for the young batter, who first grabbed global attention earlier this year with a sensational 175 off just 80 balls against England in the Under-19 World Cup final. His latest innings further reinforces his reputation as one of India’s brightest young cricketing talents.
Despite his growing success, Sooryavanshi maintained that he is focused on remaining grounded and delivering consistent performances wherever he plays. While acknowledging that certain venues suit his style, he stressed that he never takes opportunities for granted and always aims to contribute to the team’s success.
“There are some grounds where you like to make runs. I am not taking it for granted. I am just trying to play wherever I can, give my best, contribute to the team and do well,” he said.
The young opener also expressed heartfelt gratitude to his family, coaches, and everyone who has supported his cricket journey. Dedicating his achievement to them, Sooryavanshi credited their constant encouragement and guidance for helping him reach the international stage at such a young age.
India comfortably chased down Zimbabwe’s target of 125 runs with seven wickets to spare, thanks largely to Sooryavanshi’s explosive innings.
