Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the Supreme Court may intervene if authorities fail to resolve the closure of key Delhi Metro
July 23, 2026: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Thursday said the Supreme Court could take up the issue of the closure of Delhi Metro stations, particularly the Supreme Court Metro Station, if authorities fail to resolve the inconvenience faced by lawyers and court staff. Responding to concerns raised by Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Vikas Singh, the CJI said he had already directed the concerned authorities to explore a solution and expected the issue to be addressed by lunchtime. He added that the court would consider judicial intervention if no progress was made.
Vikas Singh told the court that the metro station closures had severely affected access to the Supreme Court and suggested that advocates and registry officials be allowed entry after verification through Supreme Court proximity cards and security checks. The CJI also revealed that he had issued an administrative circular directing that no adverse orders should be passed against advocates who were unable to appear because of the commuting difficulties. He assured the Bar that the court was prepared to intervene if the situation remained unresolved.
The closures come amid heightened security arrangements in Delhi following protests by supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has suspended entry and exit at 16 stations, including Supreme Court, Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Mandi House, ITO, and Khan Market. The restrictions have disrupted court proceedings by affecting the movement of lawyers and litigants. Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has agreed to hear petitions seeking an independent probe into the alleged use of excessive force during the protests and has directed authorities to preserve all relevant video evidence.
