Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that Israel and the United States make decisions independently
June 22, 2026: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected US President Donald Trump’s assertion that Israel follows his directives, emphasizing that both countries act according to their own national interests. Netanyahu’s remarks came after Trump stated in an interview that Israel “does as I say” when discussing his ability to influence Israeli military actions, particularly regarding potential operations in Lebanon.
Speaking at the Jerusalem News Syndicate (JNS) International Policy Summit 2026, Netanyahu said that neither leader dictates the actions of the other. He stressed that Israel and the United States are independent and sovereign nations that sometimes agree and sometimes differ on key issues. While acknowledging the close relationship between the two allies, Netanyahu said both governments remain committed to protecting their own national interests and security priorities.
The exchange comes amid signs of strain between Washington and Tel Aviv following the recent US-Iran agreement. Trump has criticised Israel’s continued military operations in Lebanon, warning that they could undermine diplomatic efforts linked to the deal. US Vice President JD Vance also expressed concern over criticism of the agreement from members of Netanyahu’s cabinet, arguing that Israeli officials should avoid publicly attacking what he described as Israel’s most important ally. The comments have highlighted growing differences between the two governments despite their longstanding strategic partnership.
